POWER OF MUSIC for SELF CARE

Five recommendations from the founder of POWER OF MUSIC, LLC, Kathy Quain, MME, MT-BC, to access the benefits of music for your own self care.

1. How do you feel listening to this music?

~ Instead of relying on somebody else telling you a certain song is going to be relaxing or energizing, notice how YOU feel listening to it. Your own emotions or physical sensations that may come up can guide you.

~ Listen to this Spotify playlist as a starting point to listen & notice.

2. Choose or even create your own playlists.

It’s empowering to choose or create your own playlists. Each playlist can be towards an intention that’s important to you such as

~ relaxation especially to prepare for a restful night of sleep,

~ energizing for activity and exercise,

~ a message that’s significant to you such as friendship,

~ Music from a favorite time in your life which may be from your teenage years or some other significant time.

3. Let your inner child steer you

~ Let your inner child steer you instead of your inner critic freeing you to actively make music.

~ It’s healthy to let go and be playful.

~ Find a musical instrument with sounds that you enjoy hearing. For example, try out a Hapi Drum. If you have a piano or keyboard, allow yourself to begin improvising using the black keys then see where your ear takes you. Here’s a friendly keyboard to start on.

~ Create sounds from items at home like a shaker out of rice in a recycled plastic vitamin container.

~ It’s healthy to sing. Sing like no one’s watching! Some youtube videos have lyrics including videos on the Power of Music youtube channel.

4. Connect with others through music:

~  You may be able to find some ways to dance or play music in a socially distant, safe way with others.

~ There are musicians hosting online music events that you can participate in such as drum circles or open mics on Zoom.

~ You may be able to find a related Facebook group like “Ukulele Underground” where people learn a song and share the video within that group.

5. Find a guide

~ Find a guide to tailor your path of allowing the power of music to improve your life. Depending on your preferences, this may include developing your own active music skills such as playing the ukulele or even the piano.  Contact us for more information at PowerofMusicLLC@gmail.com 415 299 4767.
